4 Tips for Digital Interviewing

The pandemic brought digital interviewing into the mainstream. Digital interviewing is here to stay. Going through an online job interview for the first time can be scary- you may be wondering what tips can help you succeed. We get lots of customers looking for tips to maximize their chance of getting a call back. Here’s what you need to know about digital interviewing.

1. Do your homework

Know what’s on the internet about both you and the company. Just because the interview is digital doesn’t mean you can’t prepare. Be sure to review the employer’s website and check out their mission statement and values page. Then, go check out Google News for any press releases they have published recently. Know what’s going on with their company and with the industry. The interviewer will be impressed when you bring up information about the organization.

2. Practice makes perfect

Think of your digital job interview as a performance. Be sure to review the most common behavioral based interview questions. You can read all the written materials you want beforehand, but you won’t really succeed until you are comfortable with your interview responses. Know how to decode common interview questions, be ready to answer tough questions, and have a method in place for making sure you fully answer every question that’s asked of you. Practice in front of a web camera or a mirror.

3. Dress for success

Treat your digital interview like an in-person event. Make sure you dress just like you would for a face-to-face interview in your best work outfit. If you would typically wear a suit and tie to work then you definitely need one in your digital interview. Keep your body language positive and smile frequently, just like you would if another person were in the room with you. It may feel strange to do so, but keep eye contact on the web camera, and smile.

4. Background noise

Be sure to pick a quiet spot for your interview. Pick a clean, distraction-free area to complete your interview – the last thing a potential employer wants to see is your clothes jammed untidily in a wardrobe in the background! Make sure there are no distracting noises like dogs barking or kids yelling for a snack.
