3 Tips to Build a Better Resume | No Coast Consulting | Career Services

One of the most common questions I get is how to make your resume stand out from the competition. Your CV tells a story about your professional and educational history. It must reflect your background in the most professional and polished way possible. Over the years I have been working with clients, I have developed some best practices for improving your resume.

Please see below for 3 steps to optimizing your job search:

1: Focus Your Job Search When Writing a Resume:

  • Choose a target job title or two to focus on.

      • A one size fits all approach doesn’t work. Every resume needs to be customized based on the job description.
  • Research skills, knowledge, and abilities that are required to do the job.

    • Make a list of your 3 or 4 strongest skills that make you a good candidate.

2: Refine Your Skills and Experiences in Your Resume:

  • Review the job posting carefully when tailoring your resume.

  • Informational interviewing is one of the best ways to find out exactly what skills the job requires.

    • Use LinkedIn to find friends or peers who work at that company or in the industry.
  • Create a skill section with 10 to 12 of your top skill sets within your resume..
